On Saturday 9 April 2011, the glass museum Glazen Huis in Lommel, Belgium opened its 12th exhibition. As the 11 previous exhibitions mainly presented three-dimensional art and consumer glass, a two-dimensional challenge was complementing the dozen. Glass as a surface, as a canvas: 'The Glass Canvas'.
Glass in its flattest form is an inviting carrier for images, but also the transition between inside and outside.
The exhibition confronts two-dimensional contemporary glass art of 20 international artists from Senegal, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium with historical glass medallions, reverse glass paintings, mirrors, glass photo negatives and glass windows. It is an encounter between old and new in an international context of religion, architecture, technique and art.
This exhibition is a succession of confrontations of the glass canvas in its physical manifestation as well as in its psychological perception.
